TRANSATLANTICISM
The core of global security

Explores the distinct dynamics within transatlantic relations in international relations, spanning their inception, institutionalization, and evolution within their initial context and throughout their existence to the present day. This study focuses on the institutionalization of these relations through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), examining NATO’s role and mission since its establishment, the diverse perspectives of its allies, at times divergent, on its functioning, its interactions with like-minded countries and organizations, as well as its relations with nations and non-state actors viewed as security challenges and threats in the new global environment.

“From the North Atlantic Charter in the early days of the Cold War to today, Albulena Halili utilizes the concept of “Trans-Atlanticism” to challenge primarly Albanian international relations scholars and students to view NATO at the center of the transatlantic security order. With a particular emphasis on differences between the U.S. and European NATO members and examining select cases of NATO intervention, Halili concludes that norms allow disagreeable alliance members to find common ground and sustain NATO as the world’s premier collective security alliance long after the collapse of the USSR.”
