Tetovo, North Macedonia – June 5, 2024: Lejla Ademi, a researcher within the Environment and Health Research Group at the Max van der Stoel Institute (MVDSI) was a key speaker at the “Tetovo for a New and Greener Generation” debate.The event was part of the opening ceremony for Europe House in Tetovo, bringing together local and international voices on environmental issues. 

Ademi shared valuable insights on nature conservation and presented practical solutions for Tetovo’s environmental challenges. Her talk focused on how monitoring and modeling of air quality can help the authorities achieve cleaner air in the city and how local efforts can make a significant impact on creating a greener and more sustainable future. Besides this she also mentioned some of the best practices from other EU regions that could be implemented here in Tetovo.

Ademi’s contributions were part of a broader panel discussion that included EU Ambassador David Geer and UN Resident Coordinator Rossana Dudziak, who highlighted global and local green initiatives. Architect Besian Memeti discussed the importance of urban planning in promoting sustainable cities, while Anela Stavrevska Panajotova, Head of the department for nature conservation highlighted the importance of conserving and protecting national parks.

The debate saw active engagement from SEEU students, who were enthusiastic to discuss how youth can drive forward the Green Agenda. They posed critical questions and expressed their opinions on various environmental challenges, demonstrating a keen interest in the implementation of European environmental legislation at the local level.  Part of the discussion was also focused on how environmental education should be an integral of the school curriculum from an early age. Starting this education early ensures that young people are well informed about environmental issues. By staying informed and sharing their knowledge with their closer community, they can create a ripple effect, raising awareness and fostering an environmentally focused culture.
